âDID YOU FIGURE OUT what to get Arielle yet?â
Sam looked up from his locker at his friend Jake, who was leaning with one shoulder against the lockers, his hands shoved in the front pocket of his blue-and-white-checked hoodie.
He had the hood up, covering his dark hair.
âYou having a bad hair day?â Sam joked, flicking one finger at the strings of his friendâs hoodie.
âIâm in disguise,â Jake said, glancing around. âYou know that chick in our bio class? The one that keeps scoping me out?â
âTrish Nelson?â
âYeah. Well, she tried to ask me out on a date.â Jake rolled his eyes.
âI think you should go for it,â Sam joked, closing the door of his locker.
âDude, thatâs wrong on so many levels.â Jake shuddered. âSheâs a cheerleader. I mean, how lame is that?â
âFrom what Iâve seen during their practices, cheerleaders are far from lame,â Sam said with a grin. âAnd sheâs kind of cute.â
âIâll tell Arielle you said that.â Jake glanced around before he pushed himself away from the locker.
âAs for Arielleâs present,â Sam continued, âfunds are limited so thereâs not much to pick from in my price range.â
âYou seriously need to find a job that makes you more money than that airport job does,â Jake said. âDid you ever get your car fixed?â
âNot yet. It needs more than I can afford right now, and I want to get something really nice for Arielle for Christmas.â
âSee, and thatâs why Iâm avoiding Miss Cheerful Cheerleader,â Jake said. âWomen make life too complicated.â He grinned, looking over Samâs shoulder. âAnd speaking of complications, here comes yours. Iâm gone.â Jake tossed off a wave. âSee ya at noon.â
Jake gave Arielle a quick nod as they passed each other.
âHey, good to see you,â Sam said giving her a smile.
Arielle had her hair loose today, just the way Sam liked it. She wasnât the type to wear much makeup, but then, she didnât need to. She was pretty enough without it.
âHey yourself.â She gave him a careful smile, and Sam guessed from the sympathetic look on her face what she was going to say next. âI heard about your dad coming back.â
âGuess there are no secrets in this town,â Sam said with a bit of a laugh, though it did bug him a bit. Back in San Diego, his life outside of school was his own. Lots of his friends didnât even know where he lived, which was okay with him most of the time.
Here, not only did they know where he lived and what kind of farm they had, but it also seemed like they knew a million little details about his life and his family. Sometimes, if Christopher was especially chatty on the bus, they even knew what kind of cereal Sam had eaten that morning.
âHow is that for you?â Arielle continued.
Sam sighed. âNot sure I want to talk about it yet.â
Thankfully she got the hint. Arielle was smart that way. âOkay, then how about college? Got your application forms out yet?â Arielle asked, pulling her books closer to her chest.
